Flexible Instruction Days
The Pennsylvania Department of Education passed Act 64 of 2019, allowing public school entities to develop a Flexible Instructional Day (FID) program, enabling public school entities to meet the 180 instructional day requirement of section 1501. The Williamsburg Community School District applied for and received approval from PDE to utilize FIDs.
A Flexible Instruction Day (FID) may be utilized in the District for severe weather closings. Students will complete their academic work from home on a FID. All school buildings will be CLOSED on a Flexible Instruction Day. The FID will count as a school day and will not need to be made up. Your child’s attendance on a FID will be determined by the completion of all assignments.
Below are the WCSD procedures for FIDs:
How a FID will be determined:
1. Administration will call a FID the day before a FID will be utilized. FIDs will be determined when, based on weather projections, it is likely certain that school would be closed due to a weather event.
2. A School Messenger message will go out to all parents/guardians notifying them that the next day is a Flexible Instruction Day (FID). This information will also be placed on our website, Facebook page and local television stations.
3. As we know, weather can be unpredictable. It may not be clear if a FID will be needed the following day. Please be aware that we may begin with a two- hour delay and then call a FID. This will only be done as long as students were prepared the prior day for a FID. We will not call a FID if students do not have their assignments to work on.
4. Traditional school closings will be used when a FID cannot be called due to students not having access to their assignments. This would likely be due to an unexpected weather event.
For our K-12 Learners:
1. Students will leave school the day before a potential FID may be called with their assignments and an understanding of the assignments that need to be completed at home on a FID.
2. All students are expected to give a good faith effort to complete all assignments. Students will have the opportunity to complete assignments upon their return to school if there are legitimate issues preventing them from completing their assignments at home.
3. If a student is absent the day before a FID and cannot receive the assignments, the school office will make every attempt to contact a parent to pick up their child's assignments/materials. Parents can also call the school to make arrangements to pick up their child's assignments/materials. In the event arrangements could not be made, your child will be marked absent for the FID, and the student will complete the work upon their return to school. The student will have three days to complete their assignments.
4. All assignments on a FID must be submitted on the day of the FID or immediately upon the student return to school in order to be held in attendance on the FID.
5. Student completion of ALL work will be utilized to count as student attendance on the FID. If ALL assignments are not completed upon the return to school after a FID, students will not be given credit for attendance on the FID. There is no Google form to register attendance on a FID.
6. In some cases, assignments can be submitted electronically. If not available, turning in assignments upon the return to school is acceptable.
For our Learners with Special Needs:
1. Timelines and accommodations on a FID for students with disabilities will remain as outlined in the Specially Designed Instruction section of their Individualized Instruction Plan (IEP).
2. Any related services (OT, PT, Speech, etc) scheduled during the FID will be rescheduled according to the frequency requirements in the IEP.
3. FIDs will be discussed at annual IEP meetings. If additional supports are needed during a FID, these supports will be included in the IEP.
Access to Teachers on a FID:
1. Teachers will be available from 9:00AM to 12:00PM and 1:00PM to 3:00 PM via email. Students/parents should email the appropriate teacher during a FID for help with an assignment or if email is not available, contact the teacher the next day.
